Kinky Boots Make Up Artist: Sarah Wolf Reveals her Secrets to Looking Amazing While on Tour

Sarah Wolfe's secrets to looking amazing while traveling. She is the make up artist for the national tour of Kinky Boots, the Musical.

I am a national, occasionally internationally touring makeup artist and wig stylist for Broadway touring theatre at the moment. I am in a new city every week or every other week, so my schedule is usually running eight shows a week, with my day off being Monday, which is also my travel day. This means going through lines at the airport or taking busses at 4 am to the next city, for hours. I have perfected the art of sleeping by takeoff and waking up at landing, then cabbing to my next hotel.

ADAPT

That feeling of opening my door to what is to become my ‘home’ for the next week or so, is exciting still. I am not only in a new city but usually a new state most of the time. Will my bathroom have lame fluorescent lighting? Only a shower? A giant 80’s four-person spa tub? It is always a surprise. Most girls have the luxury of setting up their vanity exactly to their liking. I have to be able to fit mine into a compact space, shift according to what ever kind of sink/outlet combo platter I get.

ASSESS THE SITUATION

So here is what I do to jet set properly. First, I address what state I am in. Is it like living inside a hair dryer 24\7 like Arizona or Nevada? Or, am I in a 100% humid-‘not going to curl my hair this week’- hellscape like Kansas City in June? Most of the time while flying I know I will be thirsty and trapped in that dry stuffy tin can so I try to hydrate. With water, not soda..unless it has whisky in it which is just part of the lifestyle, so all the more reason to try to hydrate during the day. I like to stash a paraben-free lotion, lucky if it is from the hotel, in my carry on so that when I wake up all stiff and dry it feels nice to apply moisturizer or lotion and a simple tinted lip balm. Sun Protection is also Important in any place. I like to use a good BB cream with an spf of at least 30. I sometimes use waterproof eyeliner and mascara, if I will be traveling all day and still want to look put together not smudged from sleeping awkwardly against my favorite scarf.

BUN HEAD I also tend to sweep all my hair up into a bun using only a bobby pin or two, after infusing the ends with argan oil or fekkai glossing creme so that I get a conditioning treatment all day. Sometimes my bun sets off the metal detector, but it’s all ok I still get through security super fast. No matter how tired I am I still look cute and feel polished, not over or under-done. I put on a confident smile so people are nicer to me. My boots slip off just as fast as they slip on. No fuss. I put in my earbuds, ticket in hand and I am on to the next, simple as that.
